Signal Private Messenger, the encrypted messaging app, just got a notable feature upgrade that tops WhatsApp, at least in terms of numbers.

Cheers to a new service that was developed in-house, Signal now supports upwards to 40 participants on an end-to-end-encrypted grouping video call, while WhatsApp is stuck at a maximum of eight.

"There is no off-the-shelf software that would allow us to support calls of that size while ensuring that all advice is end-to-cease encrypted, so nosotros built our ain open source Bespeak Calling Service to exercise the task," wrote Signal's Peter Thatcher in a company blog post yesterday (Dec. 15).

The rest of Thatcher'southward post gets into the technical details, which nosotros'll exit out here. (As Signal is an open up-source project, the code for the Point Calling Service  is bachelor on GitHub for anyone's use.)

Only as Android Police'due south Manuel Vonau  points out, Point could back up just five participants when the service added group video calls a year ago, and so this is a huge ramp-up.

It certainly leaves WhatsApp in the dust, as that Facebook-owned — sorry — Meta-owned service tin handle only viii cease-to-end-encrypted video-call participants at once. Both are way ahead of Telegram, which is slowly rolling out group video calls that accept a current limit of 30 participants just are non end-to-cease encrypted.

That means that while the video-call transmissions are encrypted betwixt each participant and Telegram's servers, Telegram can still meet what'south going on.

WhatsApp and Point, on the other hand, can't — because the telephone call content is visible simply to persons on either end of the transmissions.

If yous don't heed the possibility that the hosting service might exist able to encounter what y'all say online — and provide recordings to the authorities, if warranted — then Telegram is a fine option, given that it has and so many other features to offer. Just if you'd rather not anyone else know your business, and so Signal or WhatsApp information technology will accept to be.
